Operation cautions

  1. This product can be applied for varnishing in on-line printing machine, off-line varnishing machine, spot varnishing machine and other several kinds of methods.
  2. It can be used directly without adding solvent. For off-line roller application, if the viscosity is too high and paper stick on the roller, it can be helpful to heat the product to 45-50℃ or dilute it by ≤10% toluene.
  3. It can be applied directly without primer and have excellent adhesion, gloss, crack resistance and other characteristics.
  4. Coating amount suggested to be 3~5g/m2. Real coating amount is depending and to be adjusted on the printing paper and ink thickness.
  5. Special inks (ex. reflex blue, pink and so on) are easier to cause smudge and poor high temperature resistance and make the prints apt to be discolored. It needs special attention in the proofing test.
  6. The dark part of the Stack four-color and gold / silver ink are easier to make the adhesion weak. It needs special in the proofing test.
  7. The above data is provided by our laboratory and for operation reference purposes only. There might be some difference due to actual substrates and UV coating ways. Before applying large quantity, the proofing test of product adaption is required according to the special requirements

Packing and storage

4. FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation:

  • Remove to fresh air. Consult physician/medical help if respiratory is not relieved by fresh air. Give artificial respiration or oxygen if necessary.

Eye Contact:

  • Rinse eyes immediately with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes and contact physician as needed. (S26)

Personal precautions:

  • Extinguish naked flames. Remove ignition sources. No smoking. Avoid sparks. Evacuate the area of all non-essential personnel. Shut off leaks, if possible, without personal risk. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Do not breathe vapor, mists or aerosols. Ventilate contaminated area thoroughly. Take precautionary measures against static discharge.

Personal protection:

  • Wear neoprene gloves, PVC chemical resistant suit with integral hood and knee length rubber safety boots. Wear full-face piece respirator with organic vapor canister. In a confined space, wear self-contained breathing apparatus.

Environmental precautions:

  • Prevent contamination of soil and water. Prevent from spreading or entering into drains, ditches or rivers by using sand, earth or other appropriate barriers. Advise relevant authorities if contamination occurs.

Clean up method:

4. Operation:

  1. Gear support local coating machine:
    1. The best viscosity of coating is 45~50 sec/Ford Cup #4 25o C; This product can be printed directly to the surface to be coated.
    2. Three 11 ~ 14 kw UV lamps are used. The curing speed is about 4000 ~ 6000 rpm/hr, which depends on the utilization time of UV lamps.
    3. The thickness of wet film is about 6 ± 1 g/m² and dry film is 4.8 ± 1 g/m².
    4. The post processing can be implemented after printing.
  2. Roller coating machine:
    1. The best viscosity of coating is 25~45 sec/Ford Cup #4 25℃; After this product is heated to 50℃ by the heating equipment of varnish reservoir, the viscosity of coating can be adjusted to about 20~30 sec/Ford Cup #4 25o C.
    2. Three 11 ~ 14 kw UV lamps are used. The curing speed is about 60 ~ 80 rpm/hr, which depends on the utilization time of UV lamps.
    3. The thickness of wet film is about 6 ± 1 g/m², which depends on the varnish temperature.
  3. There are two major steps for UV coating art, including the coating step and photo-curing step. It is very important to grasp the process conditions and control the main factors correctly.
    1. The viscosity and coating amount:
      According to different coating equipment, the operation viscosity is different. The coating amount is also different for different printing carrier (as shown in Operation 1 and Operation 2). Select suitable viscosity and coating amount of UV varnish to get the best UV coating effect. The viscometer (such as Ford Cup #4) should be employed to control the viscosity.
    2. The intensity of light source:
      Thorough photo-curing is the key for quality of UV coating, or the characteristics and advantage of UV coating will not be existed. The intensity and emission wavelength of UV light source are basic conditions of photo-curing. The intensity of light source should be greater than 500mj/cm² for roller coating, and greater than 80W/cm² for gear support local coating machine. It has to pay attention to the aging of lamp and replace the lamp in time.
    3. Strictly control the addition of non-reactive solvent: The viscosity of UV varnish can be diluted by non-reactive solvent, such as ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, and toluene etc. In order to cure UV varnish thoroughly, these solvents should be evaporated completely during photo-curing process, because they do not contain the reactive groups and can not participate in the crosslinking/curing reaction. If the solvent remains in the cured film, it will be very harmful. It will cause many problems, including sticky surface, residual smell, abated gloss, poor adhesion, no waterproof, not wear-resistance etc. These situations are easier to be generated under the environment with low temperature and high humidity.
    4. Requirement for UV coating adaptability of printing paper:
      The coating adaptability of printing paper means the coating adaptability of ink layer of printing paper generally.
  • The quality of paper determines the quality of printing paper and the quality of UV coating. The paper is porous material which is composed of fibers. The smoothness and absorbability of paper influence cured UV coating film directly. The smoothness of paper is higher, the effect of UV coating is better.
  • The paper with coarse surface and strong permeation and absorbability is generally unsuitable for coating, particularly is unsuitable for UV coating, because the UV varnish can not be volatilized to form the film before light irradiation. Its permeation ability towards paper is much stronger than other type of varnish. So, it has to coat a layer of W-185 Water-Based UV Primer to seal the pores before UV coating, in order to improve the above-mentioned condition.
  • The performance and state of ink are also important factors to determine whether the permeation is suitable for UV coating. The printing paper with UV ink, water-based ink, or solvent-based ink is suitable for UV coating. The oxidation lithographic printing ink and relief print ink are not suitable, because their curing speed is slow, and their wetting property and compatibility are poor with respect to UV varnish.
  • The insufficient drying of ink is an important factor for the repellence of UV varnish and UV varnish can not be cured thoroughly. The UV varnish can not form continuous and smooth film on wet ink surface, because it is hard to be wetted, sprawled and flattened. The defects such as blister, poor adhesion, and bad gloss etc. will be caused on printing surface.
  • If the optical activity and solvent resistance of ink are not good, the ink is apt to be discolored and wrinkled during UV curing process. If the ink contains too much chlorinated alkane and wax or the surface of ink is crystallized, the flattening, wetting and adhering ability of UV varnish will be influenced. It will be difficult to form high-quality UV varnish film.

5. Troubleshooting:

  • A. The gloss is not good, the luminance is not enough.
    (1) Cause
    1. The viscosity of UV varnish is low, and the film is too thin.
    2. Coarse paper, poor smoothness, too strong absorbability.
    3. The ink on printing paper is not dried enough.
    4. Low temperature, high humidity.
    5. The light source is aging, the varnish is not cured thoroughly.
    (2) Solution
    1. Reduce the addition of solvent.
    2. Coat a layer of W-185 Water-Based UV Primer or increase the coating amount.
    3. Before UV coating, let it dry sufficiently or coat a layer of W-185 Water-Based UV Primer.
    4. Slow down the speed of coating machine.
    5. Inspect the lamp and replace the lamp in time.
  • B. Sticky surface, strong residual odor.
    (1) Cause
    1. The intensity of UV light source is not enough, and the lamp is aging.
    2. The storage time of varnish is too long, which causes the accumulation of vapor in the container.
    (2) Solution
    1. Replace the lamp in time. The life of lamp is about 1000H. UV curing depends on the effective wavelength of high-voltage mercury lamp. If the lamp is aged, the wavelength will be reduced.
    2. Reduce the inventory.
  • C. The ink and varnish are repelled, the varnish can not be spread evenly or it is blistered.
    (1) Cause
    1. The ink is not dried or the wax oil or silicon oil is added to cause the blister, spot, or pinhole etc.
    2. After the powder is sprayed on ink, too much powder is attached.
    (2) Solution
    1. Avoid using the ink auxiliary which may repel UV varnish, such as wax oil, silicon oil etc.
    2. Before UV coating, remove the powder or coat a layer of W-185 Water-Based UV Primer..
  • D. The coating is uneven with strip, orange skin, and spot etc.
    (1) Cause
    • 1 The viscosity of UV varnish is too high.
    • 2 The coating roller is coarse and unsmooth.
    • 3 The UV varnish container is not clean, there are impurities and dust.
    (2) Solution
    • 1 Increase temperature or add solvent to reduce the viscosity.
    • 2 Grind the coating roller.
    • 3 Clean the container thoroughly, and filtrate UV varnish for reuse again.
  • E. After UV coating, the paper becomes dark.
    (1) Cause
    1. The paper is coarse, and the permeation and absorbability are too strong.
    2. Too much solvent is added.
    (2) Solution
    1. Increase the viscosity of UV varnish or coat a layer of W-185 Water-Based UV Primer first.
    2. Reduce the addition of solvent.
  • F. After UV coating, the paper is apt to crack.
    (1) Cause
    1. The fiber of paper is too fragile.
    2. The paper contains too less water, and it is too dry.
    3. The light source is too strong, the UV exposure is over.
    4. Low temperature, high humidity.
    5. There are press marks and mold cutting traces upon processing.
    (2) Solution
    1. Before UV coating, coat a layer of W-185 Water-Based UV Primer first.
    2. Spray water mist on the paper.
    3. Avoid over exposure under the basis for guaranteeing varnish.
    4. Slow down the speed of coating machine.
    5. Adjust the post processing art.

6. Cautions:

  • The solvent such as toluene can be used to adjust the viscosity before the application. The recommended amount is 5~10%.
  • After the application, the solvent can be used for cleaning directly.
  • Put this product in a shady and cool place. Keep away from high temperature and direct sunlight. The shelf life is 6~12 months.
  • This product does not contain the organic solvent. It is not self-ignitable, corrosive and explosive. It can be applied safely to maintain the safety of working environment.
